Mirza N. Shams – under their stage name NAXÖ – is a music producer, composer, keyboardist, singer, sound healer and DJ. They uses multiple sounds to explore psychological narratives, subjectivities, and stream of consciousness while activating emotional pitches to navigate personal transformations through their compositions and performances.
NAXÖ fuses their Egyptian heritage with contemporary schools of sound. Their work conjures a magical fusion that weaves psychedelic waves through beats. They creates a contemporary tapestry with MENA/Middle-Eastern North African folklore music and electronic sounds. Their compositions feature transparent voices calling to resist, embedded deep within a poly-rhythmic groove.
Growing up in Egypt, NAXÖ performed and produced solo aside from being in some of the finest fusion bands in clubs, theaters and festivals for a decade. Most recently, NAXÖ opened for “Hello Psychaleppo” at YallaPunk, a 3 day international festival in Philadelphia, and also opened for “City Of Djinn” at The Empty Bottle in Chicago. At Flux Factory in NYC, NAXÖ was one of the headliners for Mark for Redaction. In Chicago, NAXÖ performed at ICUQTS, a 2 day queer transcendence symposium, and Trans Art Is series of exhibitions and performances in Andersonville Chamber of Commerce and another, Trans Art Is: Crossing Borders in Andersonville Galleria, and Trans Day of Visibility 2019 in Chicago Magic Lounge. NAXÖ was featured in Chicago Zine Festival on Trans and GNC Chicago emerging artists panel, and performed at Chicago Dyke March.
NAXÖ is a fusion music project where compositions are consisted of MENA/Middle-Eastern North-African folklore and classical music, particularly Egyptian using stringed instruments like Oud, Kanoon, Bouzouki, and Strings sections dancing within groovy electronic polyrhythms and bass lines, accompanied by eastern percussion like Tabla, and Duff with electronic drumming structures influenced by rock, jazz, trap-hop and psychedelic music. NAXÖ embodies intertwined aspects of surrealism, symbolism and psychedelic waves of queerness, gender fluidity, queer-migration, mental-emotional health, eroticism and post-colonialism, speaking of MENA LGBTQIA+ experiences, narratives and attributions on a wider frequency, energy and vibration.
As a sound healing practitioner, gender advocate and refugee activist, queerness, multiculturalism, and intersectionality are instrumental to their practice. NAXÖ’s personal healing paths and self-inquiries have led to fantasy that inspires their complex sound. As a sensual synesthete, their voice, art, and sculptures influence the dynamics of their woven compositions.
